What marketing automation actually does

Automation is not clever software writing your marketing. It is the boring, reliable jobs finally happening on time, every time, without anyone remembering.

The word puts people off. It sounds like handing your customers to a machine. In practice, the automation that makes the biggest difference to a real business is almost aggressively boring.

The jobs worth automating first

  • The instant acknowledgement, so nobody waits in silence wondering if the form worked.
  • The internal alert, so the right person knows within a minute that a lead landed.
  • The follow-up sequence, so the second and third contact happen whether or not anyone is free.
  • The review request, timed to the moment the customer is happiest.
  • The reporting, so Monday starts with numbers instead of someone building a spreadsheet.

None of that is impressive to look at. All of it is money, because each one is a place work currently falls through.

What you should never automate

The judgement calls. Pricing a difficult job, handling a complaint, deciding whether to take on a client. Anything where the answer depends on knowing this specific person and this specific situation should stay with a human, and the system's job is to make sure that human has the context in front of them.

It has to sound like you

The fastest way to make automation backfire is to let it write in a voice nobody in your company would use. Write the messages once, properly, in your own words. The system decides when they go; you decide what they say.

How to know it is working

Not by counting the automations. By counting what stopped happening: no enquiry older than a day without a reply, no won job without a review request, no Monday without the numbers. When the failures disappear quietly, it is working.

The goal is a week where nothing needed chasing and nobody had to hold it in their head.
